The response to the Cortes Community Housing celebration and fundraising initiative on Saturday July 14th –– was a full house in Manson’s Hall, all of whom received an informative, entertaining and inspiring call to participate in bringing a dream into reality.

Project committee members were transparent in sharing heartfelt stories of how the project came to be. Ann Mortifee and Kristen Scholfield Sweet offered blessings to the land upon which this new housing will sit. John Preston spoke about the qualities that make a community whole and sustainable. Guests enjoyed food and drink from Island growers and producers, along with the toe-tapping music of Andy Vine, Aaron Ellingsen, and Leonard Woywitka.

Bill Weaver’s stirring video about the housing initiative completed the presentation before nearly everyone walked together, west to the newly-purchased land. Contributions from individual islanders ranged widely, each donation gratefully received for a grand total of $188,000 in just one evening! This brings our fund raising total to-date of $1.4 million towards our $1.7 million goal.

The Housing Committee has more great ideas on how to raise the final $300,000 that will become the seed funding to design a new neighbourhood. If you were busy elsewhere on the 14th, you can pledge now by contacting info@cortescommunityhousing.org. Finally, a reminder to send your entries by July 31 for the contest to name the new community housing project via: info@cortescommunityhousing.org.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, to all the volunteers for their time & energy to create this spectacular event, to all our supporter and donors for your special personal contributions affirming the groundwork laid to date.
