On July 31st due to the amazing support of many, the Cortes Community Housing project is now that much closer to realizing affordable and year round rental accommodations than ever before.

Carol Newell hosted a magical evening that was inspirational and re-affirmed above all else how deeply those of us who live here, whether it’s part-time or full-time, love this island, this land, and this community.  All benefits from this fundraiser went to support the Cortes Community Housing project.

We were happily joyed to learn at evening’s end that one wondrous but anonymous donor had gifted the project with a large parcel of land in Whaletown.

This land gift is so significant for the project. It is a game changer:

  • Giving us an additional asset with which to leverage maximum funding for the proposed 20 new units on Rainbow Ridge in Mansons Landing.

  • Providing the community with a potential second land site for future development in Whaletown, to service so many who may wish to stay in that neighbourhood.

  • Legitimizing CortesCommunityHousing as a serious organization capable of raising both cash & land for the provision of long-term affordable housing solutions.

  • Taking us over the financial hump, even if not quite to the finish line.

We are still accepting more cash donations to reach our fund-raising goal of $1.7 million, which will help retire some of the short-term land debt to our Rainbow Ridge local lenders, but after that evening, we are so much closer. Nothing seems impossible, because of such strong community support, since we know:

It takes a community to raise a village.

Together we are doing it. Thanks to all from your Cortes Housing Committee.  Donations can be made on-line via: http://www.cortescommunityhousing.org/donate/
